AMAZING THINGS ARE TAKING PLACE...
...in the slums in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa.Despite abject poverty, desperate living conditions and little or no education, local people are starting small businesses, sending their children to school and improving the quality of their lives. All this through a local program – Maji Mazuri (meaning 'clean water') – run by a dedicated Kenyan team, with funding and support from people like you around the world.More than 3 million people live in Nairobi, capital of Kenya in East Africa, and many of them live in slums like Mathare Valley, one of Maji Mazuri's main focuses. The area is very densely populated with almost 500,000 people living in a very small area. Housing is therefore inadequate with most houses measuring around 8 by 6 feet and holding up to 10 people. There is no sewer system, no clean water, no electric power, and no paved streets. Unemployment is very high; crime is rife; illegal alcohol and drugs are plentiful; violence is endemic; and HIV/AIDS is widespread. In 1987, a remarkable Kenyan woman, Wanjiku Kironyo, courageously decided to work with some of the women to empower them to change their own lives. What started as a small micro-loan program has blossomed into nine projects: Mavuno, the original microfinance programme, now greatly expanded with over 200 members; a nursery, teenz group and youth group all of which grew out of the microfinance programme and offer development programmes in Mathare Valley slum, a school and farm at Kiserian, two schools at Matasia and a Children's Centre for vulnerable children, disabled children and orphans at Kasarani. This new website is dedicated to the United Kingdom branch of the charity and is in the process of construction. MMUK has been a registered charity for ten years and has raised many thousands of pounds to help the poor of Kenya. Please explore our new website and follow the link to the US website http://www.majimazuri.org if you require any further information, contact us if you have any questions, and support us generously in our future work. The Maji Mazuri team in Kenya has no shortage of dedication, commitment, ideas and compassion. What they need from us is financial support, and to know that many people in the developed world care about the plight of Africa people to want to help. |
